Betty

Betty

I was born in this house in Teddington in 1926, and I’ve lived here all my life. My earliest memories are when I was about four years old.

My grandparents were also living with us for a while. They had lived opposite but they hadn’t paid the rent so they were kicked out. They came and lived with us, my parents and us 6 children. My first memory was of my grandmother in a coffin in the front room. Someone picked me up to look inside but I have no memory of what was in it. I remember my younger brother was still a baby so I must have been about 4 years old.

When my grandmother died, my grandfather stayed on here . He was a miserable man and you had to avoid him with his walking stick!

I must have gone to Stanley Rd infant school- it hasn’t changed much since then but it has been built on to.
